First of all, I would like to thank the organizers, Blue Eye India Pvt. Ltd for inviting me to this special program.
Darjeeling hill is one of the most naturally gifted region in India and is famous for its tourism as much as it is for tea and toy train. Tourism is one of the most important sectors of economy in Darjeeling, providing livelihood opportunities for the people from different economic backgrounds.
As you all know that the recent bandh crippled Darjeeling and brought its economy to a standstill but after the formation of the new Board of Administration (GTA) and the Tourism Department, Government of West Bengal is all set to host a five-day tourism festival from December 27 to attach people to the ‘Queen of Hills.’
Apart from this festival, the GTA in order to uplift tourism in the region, the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration seeks two new initiatives for tourism for 2018-2019
1. Explore New Virgin Avenues-New avenues for promotion and expansion of tourism in Darjeeling region will be undertaken by the GTA especially in rural tourism. New aspects of tourism that caters to the economic well-being of the people such as through adventure tourism, village-tourism, tea-tourism, and heritage-tourism will be promoted. The GTA will explore and promote new places of tourism, especially in far flung areas, so that the locals are capable of availing better livelihood opportunities.
2. Improve Tourism Infrastructure – The GTA will improve the existing tourism infrastructures, and to build modern and suitable tourism facilities; and work towards renovation, restoration, and beautification of existing tourist spot, with a thrust on strengthening the infrastructures in various heritage sites across the Darjeeling hills.
I on behalf of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration and the people of Darjeeling would like to extend our warm welcome to all the tourists and the stakeholders of today’s event to the Teesta Rangeet Tourist Festival in December and especially in the coming year as Darjeeling is ready for tourists again in 2018
